The Fatou Kaba School Association Since 2011, the association has been developing exchange and solidarity initiatives with the Keur Fatou Kaba school in Guediawaye (a suburb of Dakar). Actions undertaken since 2011 have included improving and expanding the school building, establishing an exchange program with a Parisian elementary school, training teachers, providing equipment and school supplies, offering medical checkups for the children, and constructing a preschool. A computer room and a small library were installed at the school in 2015. The children regularly participate in computer workshops. However, the school is not yet self-sufficient in terms of IT activities, and a civic service volunteer will be responsible for continuing to run and maintain the computer lab. Furthermore, the children's lending library is operational, but reading activities are needed to encourage children to read for pleasure. The Keur Badiene Centre was built, comprising a nursery school and activities for women (market gardening, cooking, sewing, hairdressing) and a multipurpose hall for events, training, shows, and cinema.
The volunteer will provide computer workshops and reading support to students at Keur Fatou Kaba Elementary School, in conjunction with teachers; he will manage the school library and organize other activities according to his interests.
The volunteer will provide support to the teaching team in improving French language practice and global awareness by implementing activities that complement the school curriculum.
He will be placed under the responsibility of the School Director.
These activities will primarily consist of computer workshops with children and the use of the school library to improve reading skills. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the computer room. They will also lead activities with volunteer middle or high school students who are former students of the school. In addition, they may undertake other activities, chosen based on their interests and in consultation with the school principal. These could include, for example, a school newspaper or other activities.
In addition to the main activities of his mission, he can develop other activities with the children according to their interests.
As part of this mission, the volunteer will be supported in their onboarding and integration into the environment by one or two association managers during the first three weeks. We would like to point out that prior experience in children's activities is preferable for this role.
The volunteer will be housed by the host organization in a house shared with other volunteers (max. 3). The house is a 5-minute walk from the school.
